Hi, Jill. Thanks for the comment. I thought the teacher was very emphatic that the Jewish context was extremely important in understanding Jesus and in understanding the pre-Dualist/Greek-influenced Christianity. But I think it was something that he could have gone into a lot more depth about. I’m not sure if why he didn’t. He was pretty openly Catholic and had always been, so it’s possible he didn’t know as much about it as he knows about contemporary theology. Or perhaps there just wasn’t enough time to cover what he wanted. I’m not sure how much ancient Jewish culture I’ll learn about at VU, but this class definitely piqued my interest in how people lived back then.
