What is Gentoo Linux?
- ``Metadistribution'', so-called because of its exteme adaptability
- Completely compiled from the ground up using a bootstrap script during a stage 1 install (more in stages of install later)
- Optimized by the use of USE flags, C flags, and other settings in a file called /etc/make.conf
- Portage, the BSD ports-like package management system - if you use portage, everything is compiled, using packages is also an option
- The entire system and all add-on software is completely updated by portage, so no need for periodic upgrades of the system to keep up with new releases...a system kept up to date by Portage is always the latest and greatest version of Gentoo
